In our team’s experience, listening to music is good for lots of things — inspiring movement, lifting your mood and yes, creativity.
Science backs us up on this too. Music, researchers say, improves cognition and memory. And in one study, researchers discovered that listening to happy music improved divergent thinking — more ideas and more creative ideas. They do point out that part of this could be that music affects a person’s mood — and being happy makes you more creative.
This shouldn’t be confused with productivity, though. That is, we don’t recommend trying to write a story while listening to the latest Springsteen album. But we do recommend taking a break to listen to some happy music (for us, that’s Springsteen, but you do you!) and then diving back into your work.
